El proyecto de BABEL XXI nace de una discusión que tuve con un artista madrileño, Daniel Polo. Estuvimos comentando las dificultades logísticas de una exposición de artistas españoles que queria montar en Inglaterra : ¿como llevarme las obras?

De allí, de una mera preocupación material (pero esto es esencial: la materialidad), surgió la idea que presentamos aquí y que nos pareció muy potente, por las múltiples cuestiones actuales que encadena, particularmente sobre el "estatuto" del arte.

PITCH

El proyecto es una convocatoria de proyectos para artistas aquí, en España, en forma de escrita únicamente que estarán realizados y montados en Inglaterra por un grupo de artistas de distintas disciplinas (coreografía, artes plásticas, teatro, música y escritura). El máximo de propuestas por artista se limita a tres.

La realización concreta de las obras en Inglaterra se hará con condiciones especificas (de tiempo, de materiales, etc.) que están explicadas en el texto de la convocatoria. No obstante, no se impondrá ningún tema o edad, o profesión, etc. La convocatoria se cerrara el 25 de diciembre 2009. Los criterios de selección de cinco proyectos no estarán definidos anteriormente pero se justificaran a posteriori mediante el Blog de Babel XXI.

Se organizara un festival-exposición en la escuela de arte Dartington College of Art, en Inglaterra y en una sala expositiva de una gran ciudad (parte en realización). Las obras generadas estarán reproducidas en forma de un catalogo y sobre el Blog (con vídeos)

Que es lo que se cuestiona aquí? Cual son los desafíos aquí planteados por este proyecto?

Intuitivamente, sentimos la posible envergadura de la idea. Pero fue solamente después de una reflexión acerca de cuestiones sobre nuestro papel de "artistas" en la sociedad que pudimos destacar tres puntos específicos importantes.

1) La forma concreta que pensamos dar a nuestra convocatoria, lleva, en si, la idea fundamental del proyecto: queremos crear un correo electrónico y un Blog específicamente dedicados al proyecto. En ellos, se recibirán y publicarán todas las propuestas (en el blog en un formato mas conciso que se pedirá al lado de la descripción completa, enviada por correo electrónico). Esa publicación de las ideas (de las cuales los derechos deberán ser concedidos enteramente al proyecto) sobre la Red Internet corresponde con la meta de crear una vida independiente para las ideas.

Este punto es esencial en el proyecto Babel XXI. Queremos oponer una forma abierta y libre de exponer conceptos que se acerca modestamente con la idea del arte conceptual al final de los anos cincuenta: desvincular el arte con el mercado. Aquí, nuestro proyecto refleja, a escala personal, un pensamiento critico acerca de la recuperación y la transfiguración de lo conceptual en el arte. En los orígenes (que pertenecen a un contexto ideológico revolucionario), el arte conceptual se oponía a la forma tradicional de hacer arte que suponía la creación de un objeto sobre el cual se distribuía un valor comercial (entre otros). Hoy, la herencia del movimiento conceptual es infinita y, como ironía, se ha convertido en norma. Y como esa norma sostiene un comercio (el del arte), la inmaterialidad de la ideas se perdió. Así, lo conceptual ha sido reificado. Un tiempo de crispación de las ideas asimiladas, pegadas a nombres propios. El objeto ha vuelto. Hoy suele contener más conceptos que bellezas, pero, como antes, representa un valor de cambio. Y cuando las ideas en arte están transformadas en objetos físicos, se convierten en cosas acuñables.

Así, el nombre BABEL XXI quiere representar la universalidad de las ideas (inmateriales) que se juega aquí. Como metáfora, la idea de la división de la humanidad en diferentes idiomas coincide con la reificacion de las ideas, como una división entre células individuales. La metáfora de la edificación de la torre coincide con nuestra voluntad de edificar algo, un puente entre dos países, que ilustra un ideal de sociedad. Cerraremos la convocatoria el 25 de Diciembre 2009, el aniversario del la encarnación del Verbo.

2) La otra dimensión del proyecto que nos interesó fue la naturaleza de la transmisión entre la idea y la realización: la delegación del faire.

En el paso de la idea hasta la realización en Inglaterra dejamos un espacio libre que existirá en función de la voluntad de los artistas españoles tanto como de sus maniobreros en Inglaterra. La convocatoria estará libre y los artistas podrán proponer proyectos de todas las disciplinas representadas (teatro, danza, instalación, música, escritura), de todo tipo de formas (particiones, scores, planes de montaje, textos, textos con indicaciones, conceptos, invitaciones, etc.) y con un nivel directivo libre (del plano de instalación arreglado al milímetro, de la performance coordinada al segundo exacto, hasta una única frase/ concepto a interpretar libremente). Con esas condiciones, la delegación del faire es libre y en cada caso surge una obra única. Y esta separación entre idea y realización presenta analogía con otros tipos de transmisión.

Podemos destacar primero, el de los gremios, en la edad moderna, cuando los hijos de comerciantes eran asignados a distintas corporaciones. En el caso del arte (pero en otros muchos artesanías), los alumnos recibían una educación completa. Porqué entraban jóvenes, su profesor tenia la responsabilidad de profundizar sus habilidades tanto como transmitirle una visión de la vida (que llegaba a ser educación administrativa y, a veces, sexual). Cuando el maestro delegaba a sus estudiantes la realización de sus obras (como Rubens o Tiziano), la transmisión era de natura didáctica, un legado intelectual como manual. Esta enseñanza condicionaba la entrada de los alumnos en una sociedad muy ordenada en esta época.

Este tipo de transmisión contrasta con el modelo contemporáneo de la subcontratación. Este modelo, propio a la economía post-industrial, responde a distintas obligaciones económicas. Unas consecuencias del recurso a la subcontratación es la conservación de los monopolios de ideas. Permite no revelar la integridad de los secretos industriales para la producción de un producto y así evitar crear concurrentes (como los alumnos podían serlo para sus profesores). Y este modo de transmisión del hacer, de manera voluntariamente irónica, existe también en el arte. Los artistas anglosajones Damián Hirst y Jeff Koons, famosos por delegar la producción de sus obras, se definen como los tenientes de una idea y de un nombre (cotizados en el mercado) que son, por esencia, privativos. De este modo, los ejecutantes de sus esculturas/ instalaciones, como los productores de sillas de coches, no podrán ensombrecer la aura de los propietarios del nombre/ de la marca.

En el caso de nuestro proyecto, hemos querido crear una forma de delegación del faire que sea original, distintas de esos modelos, y que deja mucho espacio entre idea/ realización. Un tipo de transmisión que se acerca más de un dialogo, de una curiosidad reciproca que de un vinculo unidireccional. Y el papel que nos atribuimos, más que la mera tarea de gestores, es él de enfocar una obra de arte sobre su transmisión, tanto como su idea o su realización. La transmisión, el espacio dejado entre la idea y el hacer, queremos llamarla arte.

3) Así, el punto previo introduce una otra problemática: el desplazamiento del papel del artista de creador a generador.

Este desplazamiento ubica la obra de arte en un dominio que podríamos llamar un Meta-Arte, un arte para el arte. Consiste en crear condiciones propicias. La obra se ubica en el intangible de un espacio comunicativo que constituye como tal una producción artística. Con esta posición, asumimos una etiqueta de "artistas" distinta de otros organizadores de convocatoria de arte: nuestra conducta propone crear algo, un ámbito, que coincide con unas ideas especificas sobre la circulación de ideas y el dialogo entre artistas (punto 1 y 2).

Esta posición artística se acerca a la idea desarrollada por el curador francés Nicolas Bourriaud. En su ensayo Post-Producción (ed. Anna Hidalgo editora, 2004), el critico asimila el papel del artista con el de montador de películas. En su comparación, el arte no se piensa como creador, ex-nihilo, de objetos (bellos por ejemplo) pero como filtrante de lo existente; como un aspirador de la realidad material que intenta recomponerla cada vez. Y esta recuperación, este montaje, esta post-producción de lo ya existente, sirve para reinsertar humanidad en los espacios comunicativos, entre los objetos y los seres humanos. Esta retoma de lo ya aquí es generador de cuestiones, de puentes afectivos, de espacios psicológicos y de lugares desertados por los medios de comunicaciones actuales (dedicados al sistema peculiar del capitalismo) que dejan sitio para la sensibilidad humana.

Si nuestro proyecto no comprende el uso de materiales sino de obras de arte, nuestra meta coincide con la análisis de Bourriaud en el sentido que basamos nuestra intervención sobre la fabricación de un puente comunicativo entre dos grupos de artistas (pero también entre los artistas y la sociedad, mediante el Blog de acceso universal), y definimos nuestro papel como el de pasadores.

Esos tres puntos constituyen el cuadro conceptual general donde se ubican los proyectos que recibiremos. No obstante, las obras producidas llevaran con ellas su propia historia, su propias problemáticas, su propia fuerza, sus propios desafíos que serán independiente de nuestra convocatoria. Nuestro papel justifica su propia existencia pero tendrá filiación independiente que no podrá controlar de ningún manera. Y eso es importante: crear un ámbito, un espacio fértil, donde lo que generemos nos escapa en el momento que surge.

Babel 21st (English)

The project Babel 21st comes from a discussion I had with a Madrid based artist, Daniel Polo. Our conversation led to a discussion about the logistic problems I would meet for the transportation of art works from Spain to England where I planned to set up an exhibition. From this mere material concern (but it's essential: the materiality), a new idea for a new project arose.

PITCH

The project is an independent and free call for artists in Spain. The art projects will be exclusively proposed in a writing form and they will be received and built in England, by groups of artists of different disciplines (theatre, fine art, music, choreography and writing). The realisation of the pieces will be confined to special material conditions (see the flyer). However, no constraints would be imposed regarding age, profession, etc. for the participants. The call will close on the 25th of December 2009. Five projects will be selected. The criteria of the judgement won't be defined beforehand, but its choice will be justified through the Blog during the first half January 2010.

The five pieces will be shown at a two-day festival-exhibition in Dartington College of Arts during the first half of 2010. The curators will try to take this festival to other places in England, to different galleries. The pieces will be photographed and filmed and these testimonies would be published in a catalogue and through Babel's Blog.

We came upon the original idea, as it seemed to us a platform for different ideas relating to the several questions towards an artist's status in its society. What is at stake here? What questions are generated by the call?

After a group reflection, we distinguished three important points.

1) The actual form of our call, through the Internet, contains, per se, the fundamental idea of the project: we have created an email address and a Blog specifically for the project. In these we will receive and publish all the propositions of the Spanish participants. The exhaustive publication of the art proposals on the Web matches our intention to create free circulation of ideas as all the rights will be conceded to Babel and won't be protected in any way.

This point is essential. With Babel 21st's call we want to encourage a free way to expose concept that corresponds, modestly, to the original ideas of conceptual art: the dissociation of Art with merchant strategy. Our project reflects, on a modest scale, our critical thinking towards the recuperation and transfiguration of the conceptual in Art. In its origins Conceptual Art contrasted with a traditional way of making Art that involved the creation of an object that could be attributed a commercial value. The legacy of the movement is huge and is, ironically, the current norm. And, as a norm has to sustain a market (the Art market here), the immateriality of the ideas was lost. The ideas started to be reified, to be turned into objects and, above all, assigned to private names. The object came back and, in a time of intellectual twitch, the ideas had been sucked into it, in order to quantify, exchange, tax and value them. When ideas in Art are transformed in concrete objects, they potentially start to be monetized.

Thus, the name "Babel 21st" seeks to represent the universality of ideas that is at stake here. As a metaphor, the idea of the division in several languages matches with the reification of ideas, with their assignation to the private usufruct, the division into private cells. The metaphor of the building of a tower corresponds to our will to build a bridge between two countries, illustrating a general social idea. The call will be closed on the 25th of December, the anniversary of the incarnation of the Word.

2) The other dimension that interested us in the project was that of delegating the making, of the faire.

The space between the idea generated by Spanish participants and its realisation by English artists is completely free and will be defined by the people involved only. The call is free of themes or any kind of constraints; is open to different disciplines (see above); and is open to all forms of project (from a mere score, concepts, to an elaborate plan for an installation, a device of a piece). Thus the degree of direction is free: it may include a mere concept or score; or it could be an elaborate plan for an installation or for a device of a piece. It is entirely up to the Spanish participants.

With these unconstrained conditions for the delegation of the faire, all the pieces will be unique. And this peculiar split between the idea and the realisation can be compared with other types of division.

On a first hand, we could refer to the modern corporation of craft, specific to the pre-capitalist societies, existing all over Europe until the 20th century. Young sons of merchants (and other rich professionals) were assigned to different craft corporations. In the Art corporations, tutors taught children and adolescents craft skills but they were also in charge to prepare them to work within the very hierarchical society of their time. Thus, when the Maestro delegated the realisation of his work to his students (like Runbens, Tiziano, etc.), the transmission was didactic, a manual and intellectual bequest.

This type of transmission contrasts with the contemporary model of subcontracting. This model, relative to post-industrial society, is a response to several economic needs. A consequence (more than a cause) is the preservation, the monopolisation of the ideas. It conceals the secret of fabrication of product and, thus, thwarts competition. And this peculiar way of delegating exists, ironically, in contemporary Art as well. Artists like Damian Hirst or Jeff Koons are well known for delegating the realisation of their ideas and define themselves, sarcastically, as the owners of an idea, a name and an economic value that are, essentially, private. In that way, the manufacturer of the pieces of art, as much as the manufacturer of car seats, can't compete with the personal owners of a name or brand.

With our project we are trying to create an original form of delegation, different from these models, that permits a free space between the idea and the realisation. A type of transmission closer to a dialogue, a mutual curiosity, rather than a mere unidirectional link. The nature of our function, more than mere management through Internet, is to focus the artwork on the transmission itself, as much as on the idea or the achieved pieces. This transmission, this space leaning between them, we want to call it Art.

3) This last point introduces a third problem: the displacement of the artist's role.

The displacement relocates the work of art in a dominion that could be named Meta-Art, the Art of the Art. It consists only in appropriate conditions. The work is the immaterial space of communication that constitutes, per se, the artistic production. This is why we want to distinguish our call from other standard calls: Babel 21st seeks to create something, a field, that conforms to specific ideas on free circulation of ideas and dialogue between artists (points one and two).

This artistic statement is close to the concepts developed by the French curator Nicolas Bourriaud: Post-Production. In this short book, the author compares the role of the artists with the editing process, the final stage, in cinema production. In his interpretation, the art doesn't seek to create products out of nothing but rather filters what is already there; it acts as a hover of the material reality with intent to rebuild it differently every time. This strategy of reworking the existing has a purpose: to reinsert humanity in mainstream media, to connect people. It creates questions, affective links, and psychological spaces and occupies all the abandoned places of mainstream production with human sensibility.

Our project doesn't treat material objects but art proposals. However, it concurs with N. Bourriaud's analysis that we create a bridge of communication between two groups of artists, of people: we define our role as smugglers.

These three points constitute the conceptual background of the production of the pieces' proposals and realisations during the project Babel 21st. However, the pieces created will carry their own problem, their own strength, and their own stake that will be independent from our call. Our function justifies its own existence but will generate products that won't be controlled. This is crucial: to create an art field, a fertile environment, where what we generate escapes us in the moment of its birth.
